It is one of the most common questions when the cold arrives: what is the best way to heat the house? The reality is that there is no single answer. It depends on the conditions of each home.
The climate in which you live, the insulation of the building, the size of the house and its distribution ... The influencing factors are so numerous that it can be used for several studies.
These are the main heating systems:
Gas: the best option if you have access to the network
It is one of the most used systems in Spain, due to the fact that the gas network carries its channeling to more than 1,700 municipalities.
In this way, you do not have to worry about getting or storing the fuel, since it comes to you through a pipe.
A boiler that heats water and sends it to a series of radiators scattered around the rooms. The result is practically instantaneous, pleasant and homogeneous scalding.
It is a very versatile system, valid for both small flats and mansions.
The downside is if you live in a place that does not have access to piped gas (rural areas or isolated houses). In these cases, you would have to worry about getting and storing the fuel (through cylinders that are being replenished or storage tanks that are refilled once or several times a year).
If the house does not have the installation done, a work of a certain depth will be necessary.
Electric radiators: hot climates and / or small floors
Another of the most common systems, with the advantage of a simple installation that does not require more work than to place the radiators on the wall. And if we talk about portable radiators, not even that.
The chosen radiators are plugged in and start heating up. It is an interesting option for places with a warm climate, where little heating will be required and at a few times of the year.
They are also worthwhile in second homes and in small, well-insulated apartments that heat up quickly.
It is not the system indicated for large houses and / or cold climates.
Underfloor heating: for the harshest winters
Although it has become fashionable as the latest trend, the Romans already enjoyed underfloor heating in their own way (through a wood oven and a channel that carried hot air under the tiles).
The current system is not so different, although what circulates under the ground are either water pipes that are heated with a boiler or electric heating elements. In either case, the heat radiates from the floor and is distributed evenly throughout the house.
It is the most comfortable system where winters are long and harsh. In addition, the underfloor heating itself provides thermal insulation that will save you between 10% and 30% on your heating consumption.
The heat pump is a multipurpose heater that allows you to have heating in winter and air conditioning in summer. All in a single device, and with spectacular energy efficiency.
Quick and cheap installation, but in return you have to assume that the environment will dry out and that the slight noise generated by some models can be annoying.
It is highly recommended for second homes, as they heat the house at high speed.
